Our Life Cycle approach to environmental responsibility enables us to understand the total environmental impact of our products and operations at every level and highlights where we can target reductions.
For example, we have reduced tailpipe CO2 emissions in our European joint fleet by 25% since 2007. Life Cycle Assessment measures and informs every decision we make and is informing new vehicle concepts and technologies that reduce vehicle weight, improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency to meet this target.
Our Life Cycle Assessment tool has also helped us reduce our operating CO2 emissions per vehicle by 30.5% since 2007. Our brand new £500 million engine plant is just one example of this Life Cycle approach in action.

Powertrain Efficiency and Aerodynamics
Boosting engine efficiency, improving aerodynamics and transmissions, and reducing tyre friction all dramatically increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

We pioneered the use of recycled aluminium in our cars’ body structures. Aluminium forms the basis of our sensational sports cars and saloons, reducing bodyweight by around 40% compared to a steel-bodied equivalent.
Hybrid and electric technology can help achieve significantly lower tailpipe emissions and is at the heart of future lower carbon, sustainable vehicles.
We’re leading the way for energy efficient, premium vehicles. XJ_e delivers 70–75% lower CO2 emissions compared to our non-hybrid models but still delivers a top speed of 155mph (250km/h), with breathtaking acceleration taking you from 0-60mph in under six seconds.
Before manufacturing begins, we source raw materials and components from Tier 1 suppliers, who share our commitment to sustainability. We then work closely with them to optimise resource consumption, to reduce waste, energy use and related emissions – with our engineers using the Life Cycle Assessment studies (LCA) to specify the most sustainable materials possible.

Considering the use of more sustainable materials is crucial. For example, the creation phase of a new Jaguar XJ accounts for around 25% of its overall life cycle impact. The XJ LCA demonstrated that emissions were cut by 5.2 tonnes across its life cycle, compared to the previous model.
We are constantly developing our manufacturing processes to make them as efficient and innovative as our cars.
We reduce energy use with programmes such as the Castle Bromwich building energy management system, saving 830 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
We cut waste with initiatives that include the £235,000 closed loop recycling system at the Castle Bromwich press shop, which has seen waste to landfill fall by 70%.
We conserve water with schemes such as the Castle Bromwich paint shop recycling programme, saving an estimated 37,000m3 of water per year.
And while some emissions inevitably remain, we offset 100% of the CO2 created by manufacturing assembly, as part of our global CSR programme.
We go the extra mile to cut transport emissions.
Together, Jaguar components and materials travel around 25 million miles to reach our plants. To combat the environmental impact of this, we choose local suppliers wherever possible. We also play an active role in helping our transport partners meet sustainability goals – from encouraging the use of more efficient trucks to training drivers in conserving fuel.
New Jaguar cars are then distributed to retailers in 177 different countries. We also work hard to drive down emissions at this stage of the process. Designing lighter weight vehicles reduces the loads our logistics partners carry. Then, wherever possible, we switch transportation from road to rail and sea. We also reduce the number of journeys to UK retailers by sharing deliveries with other manufacturers and operating our own railhead from Castle Bromwich.

END OF LIFE
When a Jaguar reaches the end of its life, our commitment to sustainability remains.
Using our take-back service in the UK only, each of our cars is designed to be 85% recyclable and 95% recoverable, with no more than 5% going to landfill.
Our disassembly partners ensure that materials are disposed of responsibly; while we study this process and feed the results into new designs to create more sustainable components. With the emergence of new technologies, we are also remanufacturing more parts – reducing waste and extending the life of our cars.
Our vision for a future fleet of lower carbon vehicles is built around harnessing lightweight engineering, hybrid electric technology and more efficient engines. Together with the Technology Strategy Board, we are leading the REEVolution consortium of UK suppliers and vehicle manufacturers to develop low carbon solutions for premium luxury cars.
Concept Cars: Jaguar XJ_e
One major step towards creating an exhilarating, yet sustainable, driving experience is Jaguar's XJe concept car – a parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that delivers CO2 reductions without compromising performance. With its downsized engine, the XJ_e produces 75g/km of tailpipe CO2, 70-75% less than the current non-hybrid Jaguar XJ. However, the performance is still comparable, with the PHEV achieving 0-60mph in less than six seconds.
